It traditionally constitutes the southern end of conventional city. The ghat is located on the confluence of Ganga and Asi. A dip in the river over here is considered very holy especially in the month of Chaitya (March! April) and Magh (Jan/Feb.). Other important occasions are Solar / Lunar eclipse, Ganga Dasshera, Probodhoni Ekadashi, Makar Sankranti etc.

Assi Ghat
Dasashvamedha Ghat
This ancient and busiest ghat affords a splendid view of the river front. Legends suggest that Lord Brahma, the creator performed the ten -horses sacrifice (dasa-asvamedha) at this site to pave way for Shiva’s return to Varanasi after a spell of banishment. The temple of Sulatankesvara, Brahmesvara, Varahesvara, Abhaya Vinayaka, the Ganga, and Bands Devi are nearby at the top of the ghat. These shrines are linked to several important pilgrimage journeys.

Shivala Ghat
It was an important ghat in early times. The ghat is dominated by a building constructed by Nepal King Sanjay Vikram Shah (19th century). There is also a Shiva Temple and one Brahmendra Math established by Kashiraj.

Tulsi Ghat (Lolarka Ghat)
Earlier known as the Lolarka Ghat, it was later named after the great saint poet Tulsi Das (1547-1622), who wrote Ramcharitmanas. During the Lolarka Mela fair (Aug/Sept), large number of devotees pray here for the birth of a son.

It is believed that saint Tulsidas built a Hanuman Temple here and the ghat came to be known as Hanuman Ghat. Earlier it was called as Ramesvaram Ghat and is said to be established by Lord Ram himself. At present it is inside the boundary of Jima Akhara. A new temple has been built by the ghat s large south Indian community.

It is one of the two main burning or cremation ghat. The ghat is named after a mythological King Harish Chandra, who is said to have once worked at the cremation ground here for the perseverance of truth and charity.
